Flags for Freedom

Grant Amount: $5,945.23
Date In Effect: 2025
Schools Impacted: Jr. Sr. High School

Flags for Freedom is a powerful tradition that honors the graduating class while instilling in students a deep appreciation for the values of freedom, resilience, and unity. This grant funds the purchase of 138 American flags, one for each senior in the Class of 2025, to serve as meaningful symbols of civic pride and responsibility.

The initiative builds on Cold Spring Harbor’s ongoing partnerships with the Patton Sports Foundation and the Remembrance Bowl, reinforcing the historical importance of service and sacrifice. Students hear directly from veterans, including CSH alumnus Tony McCann, who share powerful stories of patriotism and personal responsibility. These conversations, and the presentation of the flags, create a bridge between generations, connecting students to those who have served and reminding them of the ideals that define our nation.

The project also engages younger students, who assist in folding and preparing the flags—offering a hands-on way to learn about the meaning behind the flag and the values it represents. The experience leaves a lasting impression: students reflect on what it means to be part of a community, and many display their flags with pride long after graduation.

Now a cherished tradition in the Cold Spring Harbor community, Flags for Freedom continues to grow as a living tribute to patriotism, service, and the enduring strength of the American spirit.
